Networking (Mutli-Level-Marketing) businesses have undergone significant transformations over the past two decades. The landscape has shifted from relying on traditional methods to embracing modern technologies. And the meetings were expensive for distributors to travel to. Not an enticing proposition on a cold wintery night.

“Back in the day” MLM products tended to be physical products, such as household products, or educational books, or cosmetics, rather than digital. The problem with this was that distributors usually had to hold stock to demonstrate, which could be expensive. And the ‘used samples’ obviously couldn’t be sold, so were a complete write-off. There’s no real change in the unachievable targets with some companies, but there are some downright unscrupulous practices with certain affiliate programs that you probably wouldn’t be aware of until they you fell foul of them – particularly the way they ‘skim off’ your buyer leads. Information Overload and Cause of Failure Rate

In 2000 the typical recruiting process was to make a list of family and friends (UGH) have a 3-way phone call with your upline, and drag your unwilling potential recruit along to a presentation showing unattainable levels in a compensation plan, sign them up with pre-prepared distributor form and hopefully send them on their way with an expensive ‘starter pack’.

If you could use a phone and drive (or take public transport) your prospect to a hotel, then you could hand the job over to your wealthy ‘top of the company’ to do the actual convincing.

After each distributor was signed up, the next stage was to teach your new distributor to follow the same process, to build your team.

No wonder there was such a fast drop-out rate. At one point I felt like a hamster on a wheel recruiting new distributors as fast as I could, to replace drop-outs who couldn’t meet high monthly sales targets.

In 2024 there isn’t the same reliance on unwilling family and friends, because the world can be your target audience – company permitting, but most are available worldwide as many companies have digital products instead of physical. Of course, you need to do some audience filtering, because the whole world is NOT your target market, for many reasons: lack of funds, lack of time, or just no interest whatsoever.

But the negative in 2024 is that you’re almost expected to be a digital tech-specialist, creating email funnels (and distinguishing your opt-in page from everyone else’s), build email lists, send follow-up emails, maintain at least one social media presence to find new distributors – oh, and be able to train anyone you recruit in the same wide variety of up-to-date marketing technques.

What was intended to be a part-time, side-hustle to bring in a few extra dollars can almost seem harder work than a previous full-time job.

An Easy Solution

In the digital age of networking I did set out to try and do it all myself, on more than one occasion, but was quickly overwhelmed. Paying for virtual assistants would have eaten into the meagre profits in the early days, so I looked for a simpler solution.
